Malaysia’s Central Sugars Refinery Sdn Bhd (CSR) has completed its new facility in Padang Terap, Kedah, and is ready to commence production of ‘Better Brown’ and ‘Commercial Brown’ brands of sugar for consumers in Malaysia and abroad.
CSR Chief Operating Officer Victor Ng said, “CSR has a mission to be a leader in sustainable sugar solutions across the industry, and we will continue to invest in the rejuvenation of our facilities in Shah Alam and Padang Terap to produce more innovative products. The company’s first strategy is the made-in-Malaysia specification for Better Brown, which is CSR’s low glycemic and healthier sugar option. The second strategy is the new commercial specification for its Commercial Brown sugar, ideal for industrial customers looking for an affordable, consistent, low moisture brown sugar to use in their food and beverage brands.”
CSR claimed that its Better Brown brand had been successful in Malaysia with up to 33% share of the brown sugar market. The company recently launched the Better Brown brand in Singapore and has started exports to other international markets.
Both Better Brown and Commercial Brown were developed in collaboration with its exclusive technology partner, Nutrition Innovation which was established in Singapore in 2017. Nutrition Innovation CEO Matthew Godfrey said, “We are delighted to have supported CSR in the exciting development of Better Brown and Commercial Brown in Malaysia. Our technology was originally developed for application within a primary sugar mill but partnering with CSR has allowed us to apply our Nucane innovation at the Padang Terap refinery. It is definitely a world’s first for our technology and our approach to healthier sugars.”
Ng added that CSR is now prepared to expand into the region and the Middle East with the 2 products as it now has the capacity to produce up to 8,000 tonnes per month.
