Freshippo, Alibaba Group’s high-tech grocery chain has opened 12 stores in 8 cities across Mainland China, including Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou ahead of its planned IPO in the next 6 months.
Freshippo, widely known also as Hema in Chinese, has grown into one of the country’s largest supermarket chains since its launch in 2015 with more than 300 stores nationwide.
Seven of the new stores are adopting the latest store design with a bigger shopping space and greater variety of products. Its budget brand, Freshippo Outlets, opened 5 stores in Shanghai, expanding its network to 68 stores across 14 cities in mainland China.
Freshippo targets younger, digitally savvy consumers after China’s economic recovery from the pandemic.
According to the China Chain Store & Franchise Association, Freshippo is currently ranked 6th among the top 100 supermarkets in mainland China.
