Taiwanese companies in the halal industry have obtained the Taiwanese Halal Certificate, and 80% of them are also recognised by the Department of Islamic Development Malaysia (JAKIM) as halal certified, said Taiwan Halal Center (THC) Deputy Director Lin Chia Yi.
JAKIM is one of the leading halal certification body in this region, and getting the recognition by JAKIM is equivalent to gaining global acceptance of the products as Halal by other parts of the muslim world.
Taiwan is not a Muslim country and getting a Halal certification is a prerequisite to enter muslim majority countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, South Asia and the Middle East.
THC is currently collaborating with -Eleven Malaysia Holdings Bhd (7-Eleven) to promote Taiwanese products by organising a Taiwan Halal Food Festival at around 50 7-Eleven outlets in Malaysia which will be expanded to 200 stores by year end.
Lin added that Taiwan has been promoting several halal Taiwanese foods at major exhibitions like the Taiwan Expo and these include sparkling drinks, crackers, jellos, instant noodles, chilli oil, canned food and spices.
