A Johor-based frozen food supplier was recently charged for illegally using and owning Halal logo, and has been imposed a hefty fine of RM1.5 million (US$334,000).
The company, LY Frozen Food Sdn Bhd and its representatives were charged with offering products for sale using the labels of GBP Australia Pty Ltd and Ararat Meat Exports Pty Ltd with the Australian Halal logo to indicate that the food was safe for Muslims, in a manner contrary to Paragraph 4(1) of the Trade Description (Certification and Marking of Halal) Order 2011.
The offences were allegedly committed on its premises at 663 Jalan Idaman 3/4, Taman Perindustrian Desa Idaman, Senai in December 2020. The company was charged using fake trade descriptions connoting that its products, comprising 3,418 boxes of frozen food items, had been halal certified by the Islamic co-ordinating Council of Victoria and Perth Mosque Incorporated.
The case was part of a big cartel uncovered in December 2020 involving smuggling of illegal meat from Ukraine, Brazil, Argentina and China where profiteers repackaged their products with fake Halal logo and then marketed them throughout Malaysia.
