2020 is an extremely challenging year for Indonesia as it is one of the worst-hit countries in terms of COVID-19 infection, thereby crippling much of its food services sector. Nevertheless, the food manufacturing industry remains resilient as demand for food and beverages maintain stable growth in line with the country’s population growth.
PT Foodex Inti Ingredients (FOODEX), a major supplier of flavors and seasoning ingredients to the Indonesian market, is also placed in a peculiar position as 2020 also happened to be its 25th anniversary celebration. Although 2020 started as a gloomy year, for FOODEX it however ended with much fanfare as the company had successfully obtained FSSC 22000: 2005 Ver 05, the highest food safety certification in the industry, towards the final quarter of 2020.
According to Richard Kusuma, Sales Director of FOODEX, “During the process of certification, the team has grown stronger and embodied the company’s culture boldly. Each FOODEX member from every level has shown a deep care towards the program and has extended their attention to elevate FOODEX to a higher standard. Also, FOODEX has invested in IT infrastructure that allows us to be more agile and becoming a more data driven manufacturing company. As a result, in 2020 not only we have received FSSC 22000, but the team has grown more solid and more agile during pandemic. We managed to strengthen our internal process better during this challenging times.”
As consumers become more particular on their health, FOODEX has also made an extra effort to utilise more fresh/natural ingredients in its food solutions for its customers. Recently, FOODEX has also launched ‘sambal’ (traditional chilli paste) and home cooking kits to cater to chain restaurants and the food industry that want to have their own branded ready-to-cook product.
Sambal is a unique offering of Indonesia which AFBR thinks will have very strong growth potential for the Asia region in particular, if it is developed further to include applications in various products that require the spicy flavor notes from instant noodles, snacks, condiments/sauces to RTE food products. FOODEX has a clear strategic advantage, being a homegrown company familiar with the many ethnic cuisines and hundreds of sambal varieties in Indonesia.
Richard concluded, “We at FOODEX are constantly innovating and adapting to changes in eating habits. These have been a challenge but also created new interesting opportunities to explore.”
